The true spirit of the holiday season has been showing brightly at East Side House! From Thanksgiving on, staff, students and friends of East Side House have been reaching out to our community members in need of a little holiday cheer. This important task has been answered with such generosity from our East Side House friends and donors – helping to brighten the lives of so many of our South Bronx neighbors!
This holiday season, we are grateful for the many friends and donors who help our ESH families, fulfilling their holiday needs. This December, many of our donors played the role of Santa Claus, collecting books for ESH children of all ages, spreading joy and helping us honor our commitment to education through literacy.
One of our Team East Side House marathon runners, Kells Barnett collected books at his shop, Harlem Haberdashery and arrived with a giant box of assorted books for all ages. Sports columnist and author, Scott Pitoniak and the Kansas-based publishing company, Ascend Books worked together to get us a dozen copies of Scott’s very first children’s book about Yankee Stadium. As we draw closer to the end of the year, donations of books and toys have continued to pour in and will be distributed to so many grateful children! Thank you!
On November 17th, the ESH Social Services Department organized a community lunch giveaway. A team of volunteers prepared and distributed nearly 500 lunches to people in need in our community. This joyful team filled the auditorium at Mott Haven Community Center with the sounds of teamwork, gratitude and compassion. They then hit the streets to hand-deliver these meals to our hungry neighbors. Inside each bag students tucked a personal message of inspiration, a message designed to warm the hearts of each recipient. This was all a part of a national effort called #HashtagLunchbag. Organizers hope this the first year of a new Thanksgiving tradition.
This event is just one of many that highlights the true spirit of giving that our South Bronx neighbors have come to know well as quintessentially East Side House!
Thank you everyone who has made our 2017 so incredibly special.
To our friends and donors, who are an essential part of this East Side House family: we thank you for all you have done to lift the lives of the 10,000 people we serve in New York Cities most vulnerable communities. We could not have made this year so incredible without your help!
