Annual Scholarship Ceremony, Largest Ever

ESH-Scholarship-Ceremony-227

May is the month of spring flowers, warm weather, and sunshine. It’s also the month of hearing back about college applications and the month before high school graduation for millions of students across the country.

On May 23rd, East Side House hosted their Annual Scholarship Ceremony at The Bronx Museum of the Arts. The event honored students in our high school and secondary programs who are graduating in June and attending college.

While most of the students awarded applied for the scholarships, there was one surprise that evening:

Ryan Ansley (in the above photo), a senior at our partner school, Mott Haven Village Preparatory, was presented with the William G. Schnappauf Award, worth $2,000. William Schnappauf was a former Executive Director of East Side House until 1989, when his successor, John A. Sanchez came into the position. Each year the Schnappauf family keeps his memory alive by recognizing one of our standout students and honoring him or her with the scholarship.

Making it even more special is that Mr. Ansley, who also was selected for the Overall Excellence Award, has been part of the East Side House family for many years. As a young child, we watched him grow up in our Mitchel Community Center, where he now works as a Group Leader. We are proud to honor Mr. Ansley and look forward to what he achieves in the future.

Over the course of the evening, scholarship money was awarded to the seventy student honorees, the largest amount ever in the event’s history.
