After-school programs are offered in local schools and community centers. Designed to enhance a child’s academic and social skills, the programs provide tutorial services and customized educational, cultural, and recreational activities and events after school hours.
Job readiness training is offered in schools and program settings to help prepare individuals and/or groups of students to enter the workforce. This includes employment and life skills development workshops, resume building, interview preparation, internships and career exploration.
College preparation services are provided in schools and other programs that serve high school-aged students. These services can include college visits, SAT/test preparation, college counseling, workshops on college and college life, assistance with applications for college enrollment and financial aid.
Computer access, basic computer classes and classes in Microsoft Office applications (Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point) are offered to community residents in East Side House’s Community Technology Labs with the option of earning industry-recognized certifications. Computer technology is integrated in all of East Side House’s programs as a critical learning tool.
Counseling services are provided in school and program-based settings. Services can include supportive individual and group counseling, student advisory and college and/or career counseling.
Attendance Improvement/Dropout Prevention
Attendance improvement/dropout prevention services are provided in school settings to increase student attendance, sustain participation and enhance achievement through individualized support, referrals and parental engagement.
East Side House offers a variety of educational activities based on the age of the program participant and the setting. Examples include drug, crime and violence prevention activities, introduction to computers, health education workshops, strategy games and leadership training.
Pre-HSE and HSE classes are offered through East Side House’s Youth and Adult Education Services (YAES) program. HSE testing is offered at Mitchel Community Center.
Basic literacy and math classes are provided through East Side House’s Early Childhood programs and pre-GED/Community Education Pathways to Success program for young adults. These are structured and supportive learning environments in which students connect with their educational goals.
Head Start/Day Care
East Side House’s Head Start/Day Care is a comprehensive program for children and families, providing a broad range of educational, social service, nutritional and preventative health services, as well as transitional services to public schools.
Meals and Nutrition
East Side House provides free healthy and nutritious meals to children in our early childhood and after-school programs through the Child and Adult Care Food Program. Children in our Head Start/Day Care programs are served breakfast, lunch, and snack; children in our after-school programs are served snack and supper. East Side House serves lunch to senior citizens in our senior centers through the Department for the Aging.
The Universal Pre-Kindergarten program is part of the Head Start/Day Care program, with a specific focus on services for children four years of age.
East Side House offers recreational activities to program participants such as organized games, arts and crafts, trips and team sports as well as special events and holiday parties.
East Side House provides an academic and recreational summer camp program to children to keep them challenged and inspired when they are out of school over the summer. Based in our community centers, it includes instruction in math, reading, computer technology and science as well as organized games, arts and crafts, music, dance, trips and team sports.
East Side House provides customized individual and group tutorial services to students by grade in school and community center settings in math, reading, computer literacy and science. Evening program participants receive tutorial assistance with their homework in addition to study skills.
Career exploration and preparation services in school and program-based settings include opportunities for paid and unpaid internship placements for students, enabling them to learn about the world of work and pursue meaningful employment.
East Side House stays connected to graduates of its college placement programs and provides on-campus support to graduates enrolled at local colleges. This includes connecting program alumni to relevant services on campus.
