Literacy/Pre-GED Instructor
Program:Youth and Adult Education Services (YAES)
General Overview:
Youth and Adult Education Services is a program of East Side House Settlement (ESH), offering comprehensive Ramp-Up to Literacy Curriculum (Pre-GED) and General Educational Development (GED) preparation and testing to residents of the South Bronx. Students receive instruction in reading, writing and math skills as well as preparation for the GED. Students also receive comprehensive social supports as well as Job Readiness, Family Literacy, and Life Improvement Skills. Instructors are key members of the YAES Staff inter-disciplinary team whose purpose is to provide comprehensive educational and social supports that enable students to meet their learning, educational and employment goals.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the immediate supervision of the Program Director, the Literacy/ Pre-GED Instructor is expected to learn and implement the Ramp-Up to Literacy curriculum and perform each essential duty of this position in a satisfactorily manner. Key employee responsibilities are listed below:
- Instruct Literacy/Pre-GED classes; supervise and assign duties to Para-Teacher & Tutors to supplement and advance instruction
- Create class curriculum that supplements the Ramp-Up to Literacy curriculum and incorporates students’ relevant interests and learning needs
- Create multiple opportunities for contextualized learning both in and outside of the classroom focusing on student employment, finance, health, family and future education interests
- Present comprehensive lessons in reading, writing and mathematics; conduct in-class student conferencing to provide student feedback and support especially in independent reading
- Create relevant homework assignments; provide written and oral feedback to students on completed work
- Administer TABE Locator and Pre- and Post-Tests according to student’s contact hours
- Devise individualized instructional plans for students
- Record vital student data including attendance and pre and post tests as well as assignments; monitor files for accuracy
- Collect student work towards maintaining a portfolio/ assessing students’ ongoing progress
- Prepare, document and maintain monthly narrative reports, daily lesson plans, student progress reports and evaluations
- Call absentee students on a daily basis to identify problems and/or re-engage in class
- Participate in student orientations
- Meet with students to discuss the results of pre-and post-test scores; discuss progress with students on a weekly basis or more
- Participate in and present student education reports at YAES ‘team’ conferences
- Participate in civic and community building efforts and activities as assigned via East Side House Community Development
Professional Development and Team Planning Responsibilities
- Participate in staff development including peer assessments and observations
- Present a workshop to YAES staff for in-service trainings
- Partake in YAES “demonstration project”
- Participate in weekly and monthly YAES staff meetings to review Federal core data and standards and student outcomes as a means to assessing program quality and to modifying/developing program instruction and service design as needed
Education / Experience:
- College Degree (B.A. / B.S.) and at least two years of professional experience
- Proficiency in Mathematics (Up to Geometry)
- Two years experience working with youth/ young adults (16 -24 y.o.)
- Knowledge of older youth population of striving learners
Work Schedule:
- Monday – Friday: 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
- Must be able to maintain a flexible schedule during trips, special events, and activities as required.
Salary Range: $34,000 – 36,000
