INTRODUCTION: Bronx Haven High School is a small, academically rigorous, full-time New York City Department of Education Transfer School designed to re-engage high school students who are over-age and under-credited or have dropped out of high school. East Side House Settlement is directly responsible for the administration of the school’s Learning-to-Work Program, which enhances the school’s academic component by offering additional academic support, career and education exploration, work preparation, skills development, and internships.

We are looking for a well-qualified and highly motivated candidate to serve as the College and Career Advisor for Bronx Haven High School. The advisor will be a critical part of the school team, as they will be ensuring students’ success beyond the classroom.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Creating and organizing new internship opportunities; which includes travelling around New York City to speak with colleges, businesses, and community groups.
  • Meeting on a regular basis with all students at Bronx Haven High School to discuss internship and college options, as well as conducting follow-up to make sure students are meeting goals and expectations.
  • Supervising a staff of four Advisors: meeting regularly with advisors to assess their progress, assisting them in daily concerns regarding students, and communicating with advisors on college and internship options for the students they work with.
  • Planning and executing college tours, career fairs, PSAT/SAT prep classes, and other trips and workshops.
  • Meeting with junior and senior students to discuss college options, assisting with the application process, and helping students secure financial aid.
  • Working on new grants and funding opportunities for our students, including attending meetings with funders.
  • Administrative tasks associated with position, including tracking student hours, reporting to funders, and other data entry.
  • Other duties as needed or requested by the Program Director.



EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: Bachelor’s Degree Required. Preferably along the lines of social work, counseling, education, or social justice. Experience working with high-school age youth, especially in a school-based program. Ability to work independently is essential. Our ideal candidate will be creative, hard working, and willing to search out new opportunities and tasks on their own. Strong verbal communication skills, comfortable with making phone calls, speaking with community leaders and businesses to set up new internships and college opportunities. Experience with job development and/or college advising a major plus. Computer literacy with word processing and internet programs, with knowledge of Microsoft Excel and basic design software (creating flyers, etc) Spanish speaking a plus! Minimum 1-3 years working with a non-profit and/ or school setting, with some experience as a supervisor preferred.

Salary Range: $38,000 – 42,000

WORK SCHEDULE:

  • Monday through Friday, 9am – 5pm
  • Willing to work occasional weekend days or extended hours when needed for special events and trips.
