Position Title: College Support Counselor -Full-Time
Program: Youth & Adult Education Services
General Overview:
Youth & Adult Education Services offers comprehensive young adult education classes to residents of the Mott Haven Community in the South Bronx. Students receive instruction in Reading (Social Studies, Science, Literature and the Arts), Writing (Grammar Usage and Essays), and Mathematics. In addition, students receive Job Readiness, Family Literacy, Computer Technology, Life Improving Skills, GED test preparation, Career development, College preparation and admission.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Educational Counselor, the College Support Counselor is responsible for providing college preparation, access and retention support services to students. He/She is expected to perform each essential duty of this position in a satisfactory manner. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and /or ability required, but is not limited to:
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conducting intake interviews with students and family members.
- Meeting with students in individual and/or group settings to assist them in their academic, career and personal goals.
- Planning, organizing and facilitating college readiness workshops.
- Assisting in organizing and supervising students on visits to a variety of college campuses.
- Maintaining good relationships with the Admissions Office and Freshman Year Programs of 4 CUNY colleges.
- Providing bi-weekly on-campus support for YAES Alumni.
- Tracking college retention and providing intervention services including home visits if necessary.
- Facilitating monthly group advisory sessions.
- Consulting with instructors and providing constructive feedback to students on academic performance during biweekly assessment.
- Maintain student charts and records to ensure milestones are being met.
- Attending all YAES and ESH meetings, program trainings and staff development.
- Some evening and Weekends required.
Education, Knowledge & Skill Requirements:
- B.A/ B.S.W. with at least two years experience with youth-related work.
- Demonstrated knowledge of community service/ development and facilitating group activities.
- Excellent verbal, analytical, writing, communication.
- Ability to work in a team oriented environment and multi-task.
- Strong interpersonal and time management skills.
- Ability to work with a culturally diverse population.
- Proficient in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel & PowerPoint.
- Demonstrated initiative, teamwork, creativity, flexibility and follow-through with strong organizational skills.
- Knowledge of Financial Aid Process a plus
Salary: $38,000-40,000
Work Schedule:
- Monday – Friday: 9:00am – 5:00pm
