Program Description

East Side House, founded in 1891, has served the Mott Haven section of the Bronx since 1963. A staff of 281 focus on critical developmental periods – e.g. early childhood and adolescence – and critical junctures – points at which people are determined to become economically independent.

East Side House created the College Preparation and Leadership Program (CPLP) to augment the opportunities offered by Mott Haven Village Preparatory High School. CPLP runs classes on career and college readiness during the school day and also provides after-school programming. In addition, CPLP prepares students for success in college by organizing school visits and helping students navigate the college admissions process. The program’s College Success Advisor works with alumni to help ensure college matriculation, retention and graduation.

Position Description

The Family Outreach Coordinator is responsible for monitoring the attendance aspect of the program’s Attendance Improvement and Dropout Prevention (AIDP) grant. With the guidance and support of the program director and case manager, the Family Outreach Coordinator will work closely with the 50 participating students’ families to ensure their students are attending school more often and earning higher grades.

This part-time position will include regular home visits to develop relationships and troubleshoot problems as they arise. The Family Outreach Coordinator will work 20 hours over a five-day week.

Responsibilities

* Communicate regularly with participants’ families (via phone, e-mail, text messages, home visits, whatever it takes)
* Chronicle and communicate participants’ progress and status regularly to relevant school and CPLP personnel
* Organize workshops and events to engage participants’ families in the school
* Partner with school’s Parent Coordinator to ensure efficiency in communication and methodology
* Collaborate with case manager, school staff and participants’ families on ways to increase student performance
* Other duties as assigned by program director; responsibilities could involve evenings and weekends, on occasion

Knowledge, Education and Experience

* Associates Degree and 2+ years experience working with urban youth and/or families
* Demonstrated record of positively influencing youth, preferably around school-related issues
* Proven history of relentlessness and overcoming challenges
* Familiarity with the Bronx highly preferred
* Independent worker with history of being a self-starter
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Spanish proficiency required


Salary

Hourly salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
