Position Title: Social Work Counselor
Program: School Based Program
General Overview East Side House Settlement is currently seeking a Social Work Counselor to work within our Attendance Improvement and Dropout Prevention program in conjunction with the High School for Excellence and Innovation. East Side House Settlement is directly responsible for conducting consistent counseling sessions with the student population, to determine and address causes of low academic achievement and poor attendance. The Counselor will also conduct group and individual sessions with youths and refer them to any additional services to address greater social/emotional concerns as needed.
Under the supervision of the School Director with latitude for independent judgment, the Counselor will be responsible to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and ability required, but are not limited to:
Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct intake interviews with students and family members.
Conduct daily attendance outreach and home visits as necessary.
Maintain student charts and records to ensure milestones are being met.
Attend administrative meetings, program trainings and staff development.
Participate in civic and community building efforts and activities as assigned via East Side House Community Development.
Maintain flexible hours and work days,some overnight trips required.
Build relationships with participating students through frequent individual counseling sessions
Facilitate regular group and individual counseling sessions with participating students
Conduct and consistently update student achievement action plans
Collaborate with participants families on ways to increase student performance
Creatively develop innovative solutions to myriad challenges as they arise
Communicate progress and obstacles with relevant committees as well as with outreach worker, Program Director and school liaison
Maintain an active list of referral sources (psychotherapy, intense counseling, homelessness, etc.)
Other duties as assigned by program director
Education/ Experience:
MSW and 2+ years field experience
Spanish language proficiency, a must
Experience working with urban youth, preferably in a school setting
Excellent verbal, analytical, writing, communication, organizational skills.
Ability to work in a team oriented environment and multi-task.
Strong interpersonal skills and time management skills.
Demonstrated knowledge of community service/ development.
Knowledge and experience in WordPerfect/ Microsoft Word and other applications
