Reading proficiency by third grade is the most important predictor of high school graduation and career success. Yet in our Mott Haven community, only 1 in 10 student is reading at grade level proficiency by the 3rd grade.

East Side House, in partnership with United Way of New York City, are addressing Mott Haven’s literacy needs by:

  • Mobilizing the community around these important issues
  • Providing quality services at our four early childhood centers (Mott Haven Community Center, Children’s Pride, Winifred Wheeler, and Millbrook Community Center)
  • Supporting educational leaders and Public Schools 30, 43, 49, 154, and 179.
  • Modeling best practices in engaging families in their child’s education, providing high-quality programming, and working collaboratively with schools and community organizations
